NY State Governor Under Fire for Bidding Wars

February 7, 2010
By Clinton Miller

Aqueduct Racing Track

New York State Governor David Patterson has been criticized by New York State Republicans, The Daily News and The New York Post for his handling of the bidding process for the upcoming “Racino” featured at Aqueduct Race Track.

Is this the first time that municipal bidding processes have been controversial and questionable? How about Forest City Ratner (Bruce Ratner) getting the bid for the Atlantic Yards project when his company bid $100,000,000 less than the other bidder in the midst of financial insolvency for the New York City Metropolitan Transit Authority? How about all of the conflicting deals that Joe Bruno engineered when he was the leader of the New York State Senate? Isn’t this how Albany has always worked?

Perhaps there is such an outcry over this selection because the usual beneficiaries of the winning entities did not come out on top this time around.

In years past, and presently, there have been scores of questionable characters who are connected to companies which win large bids. So why is there such an outrage now that Patterson is Governor? Is it due to the double standard of racism? That’s way too hard to prove. Or is it a classic case of sour grapes? I think that would be more accurate.

Nonetheless, if there is going to be so much scrutiny regarding this project’s bidding process, why stop here, let’s look at all of the deals that are on the table for New York State and New York City. Let’s examine all of the criteria, the lobbyists and investors. If we did, I am certain that we would see a lot more ample inconsistencies in the municipal bidding process.

This country is far from beaten. What the brit hasn’t seen is the sleeping anger that american citizens build just before they put their boots on and go to kicking. Our government has foolishly tested those lines this time and it won’t be forgotten.

  16. aarp health on March 13, 2010 at 10:39 pm

Republicans want want failure, they want things like the insurance companies to continue to rake in billions and to keep the unwealthy at a disadvantage. The infrastructures portion was what we needed to get us going in advancing our country to come into the present but the old conservatives who want to go back to the “simpler times” (ie. slavery, and racial discrimination via lower education). Our country and everyday people need help due to bad financial policy and they are just not getting it. Who is getting it? Big business. God bless America.

The problem with this country is BOTH the Democrats and Republicans. Anyone who seriously thinks that one side isn’t corrupt or slaves to Corporate America hasn’t done an adequate job of paying attention. To the Republicans: The GW administration will go down in History as one of the worst administrations. They eroded your constitutional rights, expanded the power of the wealthy elite, invaded countries under false pretenses, destroyed diplomatic relations with the rest of the world, and spent money like it was going out of style. To the Democrats: Obama is a dud. He promised much and has turned out to be another corporate lackey. He made deals with big pharma to ensure you could not get your medication cheaper elsewhere, he flip flopped on military tribunals, he refuses to fix health care properly through nationalization or single payer, he populates his inner circle with more Wall Street insiders, he spends money on bailouts and useless stimulus packages.

We may as well stick with Patterson. As Mel Brooks said in “Blazing Saddles”; “Gentlemen, we gotta protect our phoney-baloney jobs”. It’s the devil I know over the devil I don’t know every time.

lol a few of the remarks bloggers post really are a bit spacey, once in awhile i think whether these people really read through the pieces of article and threads before making a comment or whether they merely gloss over the article title and write the first idea that pops into their mind. anyway, it really is helpful to browse intelligent commentary every once in awhile in contrast to exactly the same, old opinion which i very often notice on the web.

I have to say, politics and religion bring out the very best and also the the very worst in folk. The very best because both can result in folk being extremely self-sacrificing, the worst as both can lead to unbelievably stubborn and unreasonable behavior. I am not attacking you, your post simply made me grasp this, so thankyou for that.

The bidding process for State contracts is easily as inconsistent and corrupt as anything NYC comes up with, probably worse because there are fewer jealous scoundrel eyeballs watching the other scoundrels. The bidding process, the awards process, the approval process for practically anything is rife with cronyism and “consideration.” Your example of the Atlantic Yards touches the poster child for everything wrong with the process, everybody knows it and points to it, and yet somehow it continues to roll on!

How to stop it? Rein in the lobbying money so that anyone with oversight powers will be doing their job. Keep in mind that “White Knight” Andrew Cuomo, not even having declared for anything in the coming election, is awash in developer money. Think he’s really going to be looking at the hand that’s feeding him? Spitzer as AG pulled a shake down par excellance on Wall Street, hitting a few with the law and the rest for campaign contributions, which they made, handsomely.

Pull the money plug, and require complete transparency at the time of all communications, not 6 months to 3 years after the fact. That would be a start. A good one.
